OVERVIEW

Prasat Bakong is named after the famous pyramid temple of Bakong, dating from before the time of Angkor and the most important temple of the Roluos Group that was once a capital of the Khmer Empire known as Hariharalaya. Not only is Bakong Temple found in this district, but also the temples of Preah Ko, Lolei and Chau Srei Vibol. However, there is much more to the district than temples with a wide range of immersive experiences on offer just a short distance from the sights of Siem Reap.

Experience an overnight in a local homestay in Prasat Bakong, as there are several villages offering a taste of Cambodian hospitality in a rural home. Angkor Rural Boutique Hotel is an impressive boutique hotel set in the countryside for those wanting a step up in comfort. There are also several local restaurants in the district, including an organic restaurant serving freshly produced local veggies with traditional Cambodian fish dips from the Tonle Sap Lake. There are also cooking classes to discover the secrets of Khmer cuisines at some of the local homestays and boutique hotels.

It is possible to learn about the local lifestyle by taking a village walk in conjunction with an overnight homestay. It is also possible to visit local vegetable farms in the district or take an ox cart ride, the traditional form of local transport. Boat trips through Kompong Pluk village or on to the waters of the Tonle Sap Lake are also a popular attraction. Trau Kot Lake is a popular local leisure spot where it is possible to take a dip.

Prasat Bakong predates the temples of Angkor as capital of the Khmer empire. Step back in time and discover history, culture and lifestyle in equal measure.

ACTIVITIES AND LIFESTYLE

Travel 38 km away from Siem Reap town, you can explore the remarkable stilted village of Kompong Phluk on the Tonle Sap Lake, where the houses are built five meters above dry ground to account for the rise and fall of the lake’s waters. This unique architecture has been nicknamed “bamboo skyscrapers”. This other-worldly village looks like a film set during the wet season months from July to November and can be explored by paddle boats. Viewing sunset reflecting from the surface of the lake is one of the most memorable experiences that you should not miss. There are several local homestays in the village and some floating souvenir shops and restaurants that offer local lake specialties like fresh water shrimps and fish.
