Visit Siem Reap > Puok District

OVERVIEW

The third largest district in Siem Reap, Puok shares a long shoreline on the Tonle Sap Lake and its big attraction is the floating village of Mechrey. One of the smaller floating villages on the lake, Mechrey moves with the rise and fall of the lake and includes some seasonally-flooded forest that can be explored by kayak. Visitors travelling between Siem Reap and Battambang by boat also pass through Mechrey. Near Mechrey are several land-based communities where it is possible to experience an ox-cart ride through the village. There are some good restaurants in the district that specialize in grilled chicken.

As well as this famous floating village, Puok is also renowned for its silk weaving and textiles. It is home to the Angkor Silk Farm, one of the most famous weaving centres in all of Cambodia, operated by Artisans Angkor, a long-term initiative to revitalize the handicraft industry around Siem Reap Province. Beyond the Angkor Silk Farm, there are also lots of local weavers working in the villages to produce individually designed pieces.
