Soutr Nikum District
OVERVIEW
Soutr Nikum District, pronounced So Nikum, occupies a long stretch of shore on the Tonle Sap Lake and is home to one of the largest communities on the water, Kompong Khleang. This huge stilted village is growing in popularity with visitors that want to see the stilted houses and cruise to the great lake. There are some local homestays in these impressive houses and also a small boutique hotel.
The lake is not the only place where it is possible to experience a local homestay, as Khnar Po village offers one of the most authentic overnights in Siem Reap Province. As well as an overnight immersion with a local family, it is also possible to take a village walk, learn about local crafts and enjoy an ox cart ride. Further afield is the small Angkorian temples of Banteay Ampil, which sees very few visitors when compared to the more celebrated temples of Angkor.
Beyond tourism, the district is famous for its production of dried fish, smoked fish and pungent prahoc fish paste. Rice is also an important element of the economy and thanks to the long lake shore, it is possible for locals to practice flood-retreat rice growing and obtain more than one harvest a year.
